After taxes you will end up having approximately about 50,000/year (4166/month). It should be enough to pay rent, car expenses, and have fun on weekends almost anywhere. Buying a house (or a condo) though will be out of your league due to abnormally high prices.

P.S. I live in LA, so I'm familiar with local market rates. You'll do fine even in Southern or Central california, if you just avoid most exensive locales. Sometimes a few miles (in a big cities) make a big difference in terms of rent.
And by the way, in most of CA (exept San Francisco) the car is a necessity, so get one you can rely on.

Best of luck.

$6000 a month might sound a lot for those living abroad or living in the midwest USA. That is an excellent salary. However, $6000 in California is not as great. As an example, the price for an apartment in the midwest may be $1200 a month. However, in California, for the same apartment, it might be $2500 a month. Just depends. The closer you get an apartment to the ocean, the most likely it's more expensive.

$6000 a month is plenty of money anywhere in America. Assuming you are a programmer, and that this salary really translates to $72,000 a year, you're doing well assuming you have about 3-6 years of experience.

$6000/month = $72,000/year = a lot more than I make.

I consider that a very respectable salary, as do most people here. HOWEVER, I don't know what your specific job or skills are. If you are a very qualified tech guy, for instance, I bet you can get more than that. Or, if you're a second-year investment banking analyst, this is probably right on target.

what part of california?

go to www.salary.com to find out if you are making enough to live in that area. standard of living is different for different parts.

you're going to make about 72k a year. you can most definitely have enough to live anywhere in CA and send money home.

Good luck.

You need to find out what it costs to live in the town that you have the job offer in.
