The customer is NOT always right, but you always have to give the IMPRESSION that they're always right. Do whatever it takes to satisfy them. Some people are just naturally bitchy but you just have to push their attitude aside and make sure they get what they want.

Well, try and fulfil their complaint... like, if they want a new item, or a price reduction, or are complaining about something, then listen to them carefully and do what you think would be best for the customer.
If this requires a manager's help, then go get one and then listen while the manager speaks with the customer.
Then afterwards, if the customer was being an idiot, you can talk about it with your co-workers.

Punch the person in the face, in front of everyone. Then turn and address the crowd by stating, "Anyone else want to be difficult for no good reason?? ANYONE!?!?"
That should take care of it.

At first be polite, if they continue, then say something in the lines of:
"I am just as human as you are, and if you continue to treat me with disdain or disrespect, then I can refuse service to you temporarily or even permanently. It's your call."
Most smarten up, those that don't, can leave.
You have people to back you up (manager, police, supervisor, etc) and you have every right to exercise it. With discretion of course.
Be nice to them, and if they continue, then politely warn them.
