My son is a Northwestern recruit and got to spend a day with both Walker and Fitzgerald. My heart goes out to Walkers wife and sons.

Don't let Fitzgerlds age fool you. He's extremely smart, has vast experience despite his age, I think he's ready. Obviously the school did also!

Walker was the only Big Ten Head Coach to actually spend time with my son. We know our son isn't the most sought after football recruit. But Walker made us feel as though our son was an important recruit. It says a lot about the man who realizes that his players are important as PEOPLE, not just tackling meat. I can't say that for all the coaches we've met. And, I would hope, that's a legacy he's left for Fitzgerald.

My sympathy first of all to ALL 'cat fans...Walker was a good coach and as a Big10 Man myself this could be a tough year. However if Fitzgerald is 1/3 of the coach is was as a player..watch out Big10. He was something else on that rose bowl team that almost beat USC. The Cat's are about 6 or 7 on my big 10 meter right now..but anything can happen.

I think he's been put in a tough position. The university made a good choice in hiring Fitzgerald. I think in the long run he will do well, it's so tough to get recruits to come to Northwestern, they have a very high academic standard. It was tragic that Randy Walker passed away, but in these tough times of adversity, I think the Wildcat program will be on solid footing with Fitzgerald.

yes its sad that coach Walker passed away....My opinion is Pat has very tough shoes to fill. He was being groomed for a head coach, to eventually replace Walker,,i think he wanted to have that position.but not that way and this soon... we would of been the head coach of the Wildcats in the very near future if that didn't happen...I wish the best for him and the "CATS"... my favorite team in the BIG 10 is the ILLINI...the passing of Walker is sad for the whole conference...he was a class act. go get em Pat

It's a good choice. But it will be a tough situation for anyone with the tragic loss of Coach Walker. I hope they'll handle it well and go on to have a good year.

Randy Walker was my Little League coach back when he also coached Miami University football. He was a great guy and a wonderful coach, and he will be exceptionally hard to replace.

It was a great hire after the death of coach walker. I'm not typically a northwestern wildcats fan, but i will be pulling for you guys this year.

Probably the best choice they could have made, given the circumstances they found themselves in.

Pat will have big shoes to fill.
