If you are riding it street, do it 3000 or less, heck after about every 5 rides I'd change mine. They say 5000K because parts wear out faster w/ old oil, that way you buy more stuff.

good bike, I had an XT250 back in the day. The 600 is a wheelie machine. Normally changing the oil every 5000km (around 3000 miles) is a good thing and great preventative maintenance. HOWEVER, keep in mind that this is a single cylinder bike and I would not hesitate to change it before 5000 km depending on the riding conditions.

5,000km is about 3,000miles. Its a single cyl motor and beats the oil up pretty bad. I'd check frequently and if it starts using oil at 2,000miles/3,000km, (250ml in 200km) get oil changed. If you use synthetics make sure you get one without friction modifiers or you'll mess up the clutch. if your worried about costs, use a diesel/fleet oil (shell rotella or similar) in the nearest grade, i.e. 15W/40 instead of 10w/40 or 20w50

5000 kms is a reasonable change interval for that bike unless you ride a lot in very dusty conditions.
