It was more then fair. I'll tell you why.
point one. if you watch the replay you will see Zidane take 4 quicksteps, turn around, runs at Materazzi and assaults him physically with a "head butt" to the chest. As per fifa rulebook used for world cup play and I quote:

"Article 47 Physical injury <<<<-------
1. A player who deliberately assaults someone physically or damages his health will be suspended for at least four matches. An official who commits such an infringement will be suspended for at least eight matches.
2. The suspension shall be imposed at every level (local, national and international).
3. In any case, the body will impose a minimum fine of CHF 5,000. In the caseof tournaments with an age limit, the fine can be reduced appropriately.

Article 48 Violence
1. A player who deliberately assaults someone, but without harming him physically or damaging his health, will be suspended for at least two matches. An official who commits such an infringement will be suspended for at least four matches.
2. If a person assaults someone by spitting at him, he will be suspended for at least six matches.
3. In any case, the body will also impose a fine amounting to at least CHF 5,000. In the case of tournaments with an age limit, the fine can be reduced appropriately.

Zidane did committed this foul full well knowing that the rules would not apply to him because he had already anounced his retirment. The worst thing he would recieve is only a red card.

If you want more reasons as to why he should and did recieve a red card then you'll have to pay a $5.00 consulting fee for my answers. Thank you and Vive L'italia!

PS The code that Freakzilla quoted does not apply to Materazzi because he did not make any comments PUBLICLY!! bye now!

It was fair and just it was ******* but Mattarazzo should have got a red card for making that racial comment on Zidane.

As terrible as it was for such a great player's career to end in such a way, when you attack another player it's violent conduct and the rules are clear- straight red. Zidane may well have been provoked and in those circumstances the provoker should be booked, but violent conduct will always be a straight red.

he necessary something, yet a yellow card became all he deserved. I propose, considering even as do they use cameras, in any case? They not in any respect did, and then, randomly, they do! became it in simple terms because of finals, or in simple terms because they were all hostile to france? And Materazzi shud are turning out to be something too in the game no longer in simple terms after. I mena the gamers are wealthy sufficient to pay some thousand francs. yet bypass over a range of of the finals of a international cup, your very last recreation in the nationwide team... i guess zidane wud have payed something to play! i wudnt have given him the red card. no way. he in all likelihood in basic terms watched a touch part of the rewind, the position zidane did the headbutt, yet what about even as materazzi insulted zidane? NAH no longer significant. heavily!

okay, first to the rest of the people: no one has any sort of definate confirmation about what materazzi said. there has been one article that suggested that materazzi said something that was racial, but no proof. neither materazzi nor zidane has given out any statement about what was said.

red card was fair. Zidane attacked materazzi, not out of carelessness but purposefully. even though he may have been baited, he should have never overreacted.

nope not really. I mean materazzi got away with what he did now didnt he?

but what materazzi said (if thats what he said) was against FIFA Disciplinary Code

which states: Art. 55, Par. 4 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code [1] stipulates that if any player, association or club official or spectator publicly disparages, discriminates against or denigrates someone in a defamatory manner on account of race, colour, language, religion or ethnic origin, or perpetrates any other discriminatory and/or contemptuous act and can be attributed to a certain team, the team in question faces deduction of points in the group stage resp. disqualification in the knockout stage.

so technically...if what materazzi said was against this...Italy could have their World Cup victory taken away...

Yes he had to go. I believe he knew exactly what he was doing.. He wanted to go out with a bang so he would be remembered for doing something in a WC final. Not that it matters.. George Best and Diego Maradona disgraced themselves but still are legends

no , because they ref didn't see it til the replay , if he would have seen it right away he would have immediately took action . But he didn't so the ref's huddled and took a glimpse at the replay . part of any sport is to get by the refs

Yes, his response to Materazzi's racial antagonism was wrong. As the old saying goes - two wrongs don't make a right.
