Flea, Les Claypoll, Jaco Pastorious, and Matt Freeman. (I also like Fat Mike, but he's only an adequate bass player).
I wouldn't go as far as to say Matt Freeman is the best in the world, but he is definitely the world's most underrated bassist. I hate it when people talk down about people who use picks to play bass. So what if he uses a pick? It doesn't mean he isn't good. And for all you haters and doubters who don't believe Matt Freeman is awesome, listen to his bass solo in Rancid's "Maxwell Murder" of the ...And Out Come The Wolves CD. Last time I saw them, he did a badass extended solo. Now, for all you bass players who think they're better than all those who play with picks, I want to see you try to play his solo, note for note. (By the way, he plays that solo live exactly the way he plays it on the CD, every note of it.) Good luck.

Bootsy Collins, the funkiest bassist ever. But I must give credit to James Jamerson, the godfather of electric bass.

It's not anyone from U2 I can tell you that. I personally know all the band members. And a rich guy lecturing all of us on poverty makes me want to vomit.
Just like an obese person scolding all of us about diet and exercise, what a joke!
