i have alcoholism in my family (almost everyone) and i chose to drink, and didnt realise i was an alcoholic until the disease progressed, and yes it does progress. i dont know if its been proven to be genetic, but i believe it is. my father is recovering alcoholic, and both my brother and i are alcoholics (recovering, by the grace of God)
im not sure if all children of alcoholics become alcoholics, just in my family we both did.
i guess you really dont know if you are, until you take your first drink, and even then, it takes a while to progress. but the alcohol is just a symptom of the disease, and i was always aware that i could have it while i was drinking(in the beginning) and as the years went by, i knew, but didnt want to quit.

everyone must learn from experience, and the more informed you are the better able you are to see the warning signs.
great question, thanks for listening, and please come visit me at www.threadsofhopeinrecovery.com, its a new website dedicated to those of us in recovery from all things, depression, addiction, etc, its a chat/blog site, and i could use your input on either side, thanks again

My father's side of the family does have a history of alcoholism and I don't drink. Probably 3 drinks in the whole year. For this reason, my dad refuses to drink also. His father and brother are alcoholics.

There are a few alcoholics and recovering alcoholics in my family, but I still drink. If I feel like I've drunk too much in a week (had drinks on more than 2 occasions) then I slack off a bit. Additionally, I try never to drink due to stress and never, ever drink alone.

I have, but learned my lesson and don't drink anymore. It's a scary thing, alcoholism. I learned that I have the trait too, it's a roll of the dice. Fortunately, I did something different without wasting my whole life, but everyone isn't that fortunate. I have just as much if not more fun without drinking. In answer to the previous statement, alcoholism is genetic, some folks get the gene while other don't. They same reason why you may have blue eyes and your sister has brown.

I have it in the family and I still drink. I love wine w food and am so thankful that alcoholism doesn't affect me.....

Do I still drink around a friend or family member who does NOT drink? It depends. I always ask. Some are very comfortable with it...some its just too much....

I have a long family history of alcoholism from both sides, and yes there's an occasional drink here and there (more on instinct than not). It's not a question of if you will fall to alcoholism it's are you strong enough and have the will power to over come it...

I'm with Ladyjno7 my parents and brother are alcoholics and I do drink and love to drink but don't know why. Although I was never much of a drinker in my younger years like when I was in college and everyone was doing it. I have only actually been drinking for a couple of years.

Almost everyone on my father's side is a recovered alcoholic. And I do still drink. I have never drank in excess myself. in fact I have only been drunk like twice maybe three times this year. Alcoholism is a tendency, not genetic, that doesn't mean you're going to become one if you drink.

Both my parents are recovering alcoholics....I drink very little, my brother has a problem. I don't think just because it's in your family that you will become an alcoholic if you drink.

i do have alcoholism In my family... i grew up with drunk azz parents. I'm 33 and my mom has been sober for 15 years and my dad still drinks daily. they are divorced, my mom had to leave, they were abusive to eatchother.... but the answer i want to give is yes.... i do drink... on occasions... like maybe 3-4 times a year. i don't have a problem and i don't think just because your parents are alcoholics means you have top follow in there footsteps, we all have choices in life.
