Disconnect your computer from the internet. That's it.

In the first place, any software that's developed is eventually defeated by some hacker. It's what they do. Even if you get something, and it works really well now, the better it works and the more common it becomes, the more likely it is that someone is going to spend time defeating it.

Secondly, despite what you see on TV, "hackers" spend a lot more time on commercial computing than on private computer hacking. Personal computer issues are malicious viruses. Identity theft issues are more common from hacking of commercial computers than home hacking. And credit card thift is the result of (a) Errors by vendors (again, commercial hacking), (b) fake web sites (which the user navigated to), and (c) Lost or stolen cards and statements.

So, the best stuff: Common Sense.
How do you get it: Live and learn.

If you really want to know and learn a lot then research hackers and hacking, and learn to think like they do. If you don't know their tricks you will never be able to stop them. Besides, the "best stuff" is irrelavant if you can't configure it and don't know how to block and protect what they are after.
