Not the political implications, I am interested only in the history and how two countries that call each other enemy can co-exist in such a small area. Thanks.

US basically forced the spaniards to sign a treaty after de US-Spain war in the late 1800's. You remember the explosion at the Maine, staged by the US. That event sparked the war. In the end, US got Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.

It's interesting how events like the Maine explosion, pearl harbor, the tonkin gulf affair and 9/11 seem so similar...

After the Spanish American War we never left.

America does not leave after occupying a country. We are still in Germany Japan Korea.

Check back in a 100 years and see how were doing in Iraq

This site explains the history. It's a rocky one, but it's been in place since the end of the Spanish American War.

Are far as money is concerned, since coming to power in 1959, Cuban president Fidel Castro has refused to cash all but the very first check in protest.

people of all creeds can co-exist as long as they communicate with one another, once the talking stops the fighting starts.

I'm not exactly sure about how Guantanamo came to pass i believe we bought the land from Cuba (just enough land for a base) maybe the US embassy is on that land so they need to protect it.
