It seems to me that we have a great potential and if you compare us to the worst places..yes we shine but if you compare us to what we could be.. we are failing miserably.

Well, I don't know if it was ever true in any 'universal' sense. It certainly is natural to have pride in your home country. I think every country has some accomplishments they are proud of. The US is very large and very successful, and some people will insist that those accomplishments make it 'the Greatest'. But Muhammad Ali was certainly 'the Greatest' in his time, as was Alexander the Great. The US can be commended for having made a lot of progress in both social and physical fields during it's short history, especially without having gone out and conquered any other nations. ( The Indian Nations would be the glaring exception to that, but they were not yet organized in a way that the primitive settlers from Europe recognized as nations at that time. By the time society had made enough progress to recognize the native people's rights, the damage was long done...)

As much as many people feel that it may be being overdone at this time, one of the strengths of this country was to look at it's flaws and attempt to correct and grow from them. That isn't something that many countries have actively valued. Obsessing over our flaws may not be useful, but recognizing that we may have them, and determining whether they can be overcome at this time is still worthwhile.

Yes - America is the Greatest! We have more freedoms than most people dream of. We can work to make a better life for ourselves. We vote to choose our government. We chose our own friends and our mates. Life is good here.
Unfortunately, we are in a situation with the current government that is really bad. Our President has made decisions that I sincerely do not believe in - but I do support our troops 150%. A lot of the world is really bashing us now. Hopefully when we have another election, our new President will not take away our freedoms (wiretaps, etc) as Bush has and will run this country as a democracy - not as a monarchy.

It is still the greatest. Unfortunately alot of it is because other places are so, well, un-great. We enjoy the highest standard of living, the most respected judicial system in the world, an education system second to none -- but only because living standards in most countries are so poor, justice is in short supply all around the globe and education unfortunately more a privelege than right in so many places.

We'll only remain the greatest if we maintain the standards that have made us great. Given the situation in the rest of the world and the fluidity with which communications and people and jobs travel, our biggest concern is getting to be how to avoid being dragged down to the level of most of the rest of the world. Just staying ahead of an increasingly lousy pack is not going to keep us great.

I would love to see these ppl that claim America is such a bad place to live go live in another country where the freedoms you take for granted here are not even allowed. Then get back to me on whether or not America is the greatest country in the world.

It is no longer true. George Bush singlehandedly caused the rest of the world to see this country as an arrogant bully. We are far from great in social programs or educating - come to think of it maybe that why the smirking inarticulate imbecile was elected-------TWICE!

The lost of respect is evident in more country thumbing their nose at us and going about their business developing nuclear power etc.

They are no longer afraid of the US.

Actually all through school I always heard about the failures in American history (besides the Revolutionary war) rather than the glories. That's just me though. I live in the US and went to public school.
