I once read about a guy who broke into a woman's house, robbed it, and killed her rat terrier by burning it to death in the oven. What do you think would be a suitable punishment?

I only wish this were an urban legend. Unfortunately, I read about it in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. It took place in Georgia.

Chickens and pigs get boiled alive at the slaughterhouse all the time, too bad they aren't beloved pets so we could punish cruelty where it happens every minute of every day. Feel the injustice for the dog and eat some meat- the world is wacked.

As for the guy who roasted the dog, I think he should be slow roasted on an open spit until well done, but the courts don't listen to me. How about hard labor in the Arizona desert moving one grain of sand at a time to a point (by walking) 1/2 mile down the road until he has piled the equivalent to 10 times the weight of the dog.

TO Joyce T: Chickens and pigs DO NOT get boiled alive at the slaughterhouse, at least in the US. The only animals that are boiled alive are in the seafood category like lobster and most crabs because their meat turns toxic very quickly after death.

Meat that comes from the slaughter house is raw, not cooked.

The question is based on animal cruelty. A suitable punishment for a felony such as arson could not be more than 10 years in prison plus restitution. Sure, you may want to "tear his testicles off" or "rip off his skin and throw him in a vat of salt", but America doesn't work like that. Even in Arkansas, they won't hang him for that; especially if he's white.

The most suitable punishment cannot come from Hamurrabi's code; an eye for an eye does not work with animals. Would it be more acceptable if he ate the dog afterwards? Or if he claimed this as a religious ceremony? If he pulls the right strings in court, he could get away free and clear of any charges. God forbid we suppress his religious rights...

Burning him to death the same way.

Build a giant oven, and slide him in.

hey hey,
it's not you or I to decide what the punishment will be. There are laws for everything...any of us in here might make judgements based on emotions but we really dont know the reasons for that guy's acts and his state of mind in general or at that time and lots and lots of other considerations. Leave him to law.

treating him the same way as he treated the rat, if the rat could talk it would want him to die slowly very slowly since he was killed, make him suffer, though and dont let him be happy cause he took something that can never be replaced

burn him in the oven...people are sick and cruel. Truthfully I'd rather hear about some guy who put someone else in an oven but animals are just innocent creatures.
