You only get a scan on the NHS before 20 weeks if the doctors are concerned about something. Normally a scan in the first month will not show up anything other than a blob to show a pregnancy is there or they can check the correct shape is there to confirm if there is any abnormalities early on. I have had high risk pregnancies and a scan was only done after 6 weeks and then to check for abnormalities. Dating scans are not so reliable in the beginning and can be out by 2 weeks duration. Privately you can get a scan at any time but most wont get any benefit at such an early stage. There would have to be a history of problems in pregnancy to be offered one even at 6-8 weeks, its hardly the size of a fingernail.

Not generally - unless there's some reason to think that there may be something wrong.
If memory serves, the first scan in a normal pregnancy is either 12 or 18 weeks.
After just 1 month, the woman would probably require an internal scan as an over the tummy one wouldn't show anything up.

It depends. I was under the care of a fertility clinic when I became pregnant so I had a transvaginal scan at seven weeks performed by the clinic just to check the baby was actually in there and was alive. But normally (for those not under any special care) you would have to wait for your first scan until you were 12 weeks (in the UK anyway) for your "dating" scan.
They can do an earlier scan if there are any concerns about the pregnancy and I think they can detect a fetus from about 6 weeks or so - before that there isn't really anything to see and pregnancy can only be detected from the levels of HcG hormone in your blood or urine.

In the UK it is normal to have a scan/ultrasound at 12 weeks. If you are high risk of ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancy) or other complications you might be offered a scan earlier. I've been told when I eventually conceive I'll have a scan at 5 weeks, as this is earliest they can see the baby. An early scan is usually called a TV scan, which stands for trans vaginal. The sonographer has to insert a rod into the vagina to see the baby as it is too small to be seen through the abdomenal wall.
Check out the web site I've posted for more info.

Possibly... maybe she thinks she is about one month, but the doctors want to check and see to confirm dates or for any other risks the doctors are concerned about.
You would hardly notice any symptoms or suspect pregnancy at one month. Maybe by about 5-6 weeks, once a period has been missed.
Once a pregnancy is confirmed, it is always 2 weeks further along than the first day of the last period. Which means, day one of bleeding. So whilst you may calculate 4 weeks since having sexual intercourse, the pregnancy is considered 6 weeks along.
In a normal pregnancy, your first scan is around 14-16 weeks so just after 3 months, and then again around 26 weeks.. 6 months.
Hope this helps.

Hi there - In the old days you didn't have any sort of scan until week 20. Now days you have one about week 6-8 to confirm pregnancy and to see a heart beat. You can have another at week 12, and then week 20 to have a level II ultrasound to check out your baby's organs and see if you are having a boy or a girl.

In the UK you usually have a scan about 10 weeks and another about 16-20 weeks, if there has been problems with previous pregnancies or if there has been bleeding, then earlier scans are often carried out.

Depends if there is a problem.
I bled during my 6th week of pregnancy and was sent for a scan. Couldn't see anything with the scan which they pass over your belly, so that had to do an internal scan.
This was better as it showed the heart beat.
Put everybody's mind at rest (mine and my husband's)

If the woman does not remember when her last period was then she will have one to give her a due date. I am high risk so I have had 4 ultra sounds already and only 17 weeks along and will be having one every 4 weeks starting at 22 weeks.
