There are a variety of resources for you.
First off, get to know your local music stores, and not your big chains. Find a record store which stocks your local artists, posts their fliers, and knows who your local artist are. Also, look into your local alternative press: weekly newspapers and online sources can keep you informed about your local scene.
If you are looking for more artists on a national level, there are some other sources. You can browse the music pages of MySpace (you don't need to sign up to do this). The Music tab at the top of the home page will take you to an index by genre, with lists of artists organized by major label, indie, and unsigned. That distinction is a little fuzzy, as I have seen some major label artists in the unsigned column (possibly to get a higher rating, and on an earlier page), but it still offers a good variety.

Fingertight is, well was, a great band from the Bay area, sadly they disbanded in 2004. However, most major stores still sell their CD "In the Name of Progress. Machine Head is probably the best underground band in the world. 30 Seconds to Mars is awesome as well as a rock band called UnderDarkSky, they can be found on myspace. Theyre not on a major label or anything, but I'm a fan.

"Twice Baked" is one of Potland Oregon's finest bands that you've not heard of...
check out the cdbaby link. you can listen to clips from all of the songs on their cd, and almost all of them are different styles, but mostly rock based.
I recommend Camping, Bonghits For Jesus, Living in a Mushroom, Plasma, and Looking for Mushrooms as rockers.
Rastafari Safari is reggae, Tanked and Volcano are spaceout instrumental, Fumar Fugue is classical, and Dank Circus is kind of old-timey
