No quite the opposite.. if the next stage of life is eternal and that life is determined by how we live this one... it makes this life EXTREMELY important. For example, if you end up in Hell for eternity b/c of the decisions you made during your life, wouldn't you considered those choices extremely important; definitely not meaningless.

Would not an eternally meaningless life be a kind of death...? You might as well say that there is nothing but death!
If this life is all there is, how can there be any meaning to it? There are many who believe that there is no meaning to life at all. (Don't ask me why they continue to live.) What if our present life is meaningless...? If meaninglessness is what you are looking for, it does not require that you look to eternal life to find it! You can find it in present day life.
If Bill Gates or George Bush were to drop dead one day, would the Sun notice it? Or would the Moon care? Would the Milky Way miss them? Who would miss them aside from some insignificant pieces of dirt clinging to the surface of a rock called earth? And how much more significant and important are they than we are...? You want to talk about meaningless!!!
It seems to me that if there is any meaning at all to be found it must lie beyond this life we know. Death is real. It will be more uncomfortable than we believe, more terrifying than we might expect, and sooner than we think.

What the Bible means by promising eternal life is the promise that our Saviour shall one day return to end our pain & sorrow. That we shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever.
It is not deceptive rather a statement that there's more beyond this lifetime than just death & suffering but a promise for a better tomorrow. I think you pretty much answered your question in what's the point in living, had you not lived it?
We're all placed here for a purpose, and though we may not know what that is, it'll be revealed to you when you least expect it. To live is to go through the trials, difficulties & obstacles that it has to bring.
So did Jesus. He too went through a life of struggles & hardship. By living, we understand His purpose in our quest on this Earth.

If the Bible is to believed...then God must be quite cruel. According to the Bible we are to be rewarded or punished based upon what we do in this life. If life is eternal, however, this would not be fair. To be rewarded or punished as a result of our blip of a life in eternal existance would be akin to rewarding or punishing someone for a lifetime because they laughed or cried during the first second of their life. Very cruel...

Part of the gift of free will to choose.
I can neither believe how anyone can choose to believe in nothingness.
I can neither believe how anyone can make decisions without truth, or believe there is no absolute truth.
I can neither believe how anyone could wander aimlessly through life with no purpose or meaning.
etc, etc.
