Sorry, I'm not asking how to pass this algebraic expression from one form two another. I'm asking about what are the ideas behind this gaussian expression.

It beats me, but have you thought that ds = (du+dv)? That would give ds^2 = (du + dv)^2 = du^2+2dudv+dv^2. The expression looks familiar, but I do not remember if I've seen it before.
