Before we got transistor radio's you actually bought the machine and the aerial separate. After some time you bought it together. That was the set. Al you needed to get it to work and watch TV...or listen to the radio.

Somehow the word set just stuck and even though you still may have to buy a decoder separately... they still call just the TV a set.

Back in the very early days of television, when you bought a TV, you got not only the case in which it was housed, but the "projector" and tubes as well, which required a little bit of assembly when you got it home. I would assume the term "TV set" came from that.

For the same reason it was called a 'radio set' before TV, and a 'pair of pants'. People are stupid!

I guess it's because it's a "set" of parts that make up the TV??

Why is it a "pair" of pants & only one shirt?
Why do we park on a driveway & drive on a parkway?

Good question.
