Although I started life as a forward (LW) I play primarily D these days, mostly C or D division (I've been playing 4 or so years). I'm a decently fast skater -- short stature but muscular and very strong legs so I can get going when I need to -- but also like to grind a little, and tend to be one of the more physical players on my team. (How was that for diplomatic?)

I was told to skate with a 1/2" hollow after I broke my foot last year, while I was rehabbing and getting my edges and muscle tone back. I'm full strength now.

1/2" definitely doesn't have enough dig anymore.

So -- what hollow now?

I use 3/8"... I am a very good skater and on the ice five or six times a week (coaching, officiating and playing)... I have used a 5/16" but it is more bite than I want and I do not want to sharpen my skates every day... My son, he is seven, uses 1/2" as although he is a good skater for his age, he is still developing his skills and working on his abilities... He skates three times a week... We sharpen our skates about every two to three weeks... So to directly answer your question, use the 3/8"...

The ice rink that I go to uses a standard 3/8" stone. Try this sight to learn more.
