Players, even defending HR Derby champs, can only participate in the HR Derby if they make the all star team. Since Abreu did not, he can not participate in the Derby

you r wrong cuz defending champs hardly ever get asked back to defend, why? I guess u have 2 ask baseballs commish 4 the answer.

He couldn't cuz the derby is only for all stars and he didn't make it to the all star game this year :(

not true that only all stars can participate, heesop choi was in it last year even though he wasnt an all star cuz it was an international derby

I'm with you. He should have been asked back. Can't properly crown a new champion without allowing the old one a chance to defend his title.
