I recently purchased an 2003 Ford Exposion and it only came with one key. The dealer wants $150.00. There has to be a cheaper way to buy a 2 dollar key.

There is a microchip in many modern keys to help in theft prevention. That is why they cost so much.

Plus, car dealers are notorious for gouging.

Getting a transponder key copied requires not only the key cuts but also programming to match your vehicle. These keys are usually restricted to locksmiths and dealers. The programming equipment is quite expensive as are the key blanks. This is the reason for the high price.

I ran into the same situation. I got a plain old duplicate key made. (without the chip). it will open the door and it will start it, but it will only run for approx 5 seconds. I put the key in a magnetic key box and hid it underneath in case I locked the keys in the car. There is no cheap way around this one.

It's probably one of those keys with the anti-theft chip in it. They started doing that a few years ago and you can only get them from the dealer or manufacturer.

You could have one made at Wal-mart, but it wouldn't work.

Thank you technology....

Unfortunately, I have been told that there is no why around purchasing the key from the dealer. The chip is not copyable. If you were to get one from anywhere other then the dealer it would be useless to you.

Hardwood stores, $5-10. Unless it's some type of super special complicated key with a microchip in it. Sorry.

If you have a copy of the key, go to Walmart. If it has a chip in it, I'd call around to locksmiths for estatments.
