Would they reprimand Materazzi or penalize the team? The game is over and Italy won so what can they do?

If they can't do anything why are they investigating it?

To the person who goes by the name of "Report Abuse" if you read my question you will see that I did not offer any opinions on the matter. And yes, I have heard of free speech.

Wow, man there are some messed up and rude comments....[especially the last one]. Can you people ever leave mothers and families out of these personal comments?! Get a life seriously. And Fifa can't do too much like take the trophy back obviously, but they should do something to prevent anything like this in the future and should act upon it spontaneously.

If it is proven that Materazzi said what people are accusing him of saying, then FIFA must have no choice but to:
1. Strip italy of the WC.
2. Give the cup to the second place finisher , which happens to be France.
Lastly, people must realize that throwing Zidan of the game was no fair, because the main referre did NOT see the incident. In other words, FIFA can not use video replays to see what has happened and therefore punishing France and reward italy, yet they don't use video replays to see that italy's PK against Australia was bogus.

IF Materazzi did actually say a racist comment to Zidane, they'd probably penalize him.. what with the whole "say no to racism" campaign I don't think they'd take it lightly. Sure other players might've said racist comments all over the WC, but none became the reason for what could potentially be the most remembered moment of the whole WC.

They could fine him perhaps but this is uncertain as he denies having said anything, but lip readers are trying to find out what he said on the telecast.
The only reason an investigation can take place at all is because FIFA investigates the cause of all red cards issued.

FIFA could ban the team from playing in next World Cup as a grave warning to other teams about the seriousness of racism...although I think it's unlikely.
Teams supposedly can get penalised for the racist behaviours of their fans. Fans beware!!!

I don't think FIFA would strip Italy of the WC, that is completely unfair. France lost because they didn't convert the penalty, not because Zidane got sent off. It may have contributed to their loss, but it's not the reason.

Give a fine and/or suspend from future FIFA games. I imagine if Ronoldo got $5000 fine for a stupid dive, then the other offence would be rather punitive.

Have you ever heard of freedom of speech? I know it was an international game but both Italy and France are democracies and support their citizens' right to say what they please. I don't like racial comments either but that doesn't mean we should make laws or soccer rules against them.

Maybe sanction him a little but insults are part of any game. Zidane had no right to lose his cool in such an event in such a crucial point in time. Basicly he let everyone down.

The thing is, even if he did make a racial comment, those comments are made by every team throughout the whole series...so what would they do? penalize the whole lot of them?
