tuesday is the slowest movie night at theatres because theatrical release dates are usually friday (except movies trying to artificially inflate their opening weekend numbers by opening on wednesday or thursday) but new home videos are released on tuesday, so many movie fans that rent/buy from normal stores (ie not thru the mail like netflix) are home watching movies on tuesday.

so they'll try anything to get these people into the theater that day, since their main customer base is at home watching dvd's

Tuesday is usually a down time for movie theatres. I know one that does a "tightwad tuesday" and discounts tickets 50%. They do the free popcorn because it is a low cost item that can be given as an incentive.
