The simple and correct answer is that tobacco does not alter your perceptions and reaction times as does alcohol. Nobody ever got into a fatal accident while under the influence of nicotiene. Since alcohol abuse endangers others far more acutely than does tobacco abuse, regulators figure, then alcohol must be more carefully controlled.
NOTE: we're finding out that second-hand smoke is far more hazardous than previously thought, but the danger from alcohol misuse is still much more immediate, so there's not likely to be much of a change in the respective laws any time soon.
NOTE # 2: You don't need alcohol to have fun or prove you're an adult, any more than smoking proves you're "all grown up".

The laws of the power elite to enslave the poorer class of people. The laws are made by the upper class of society. They are only thinking about how much more money they can get into their pockets than the well-being of the general population.
Also it could be the thinking that alcohol is a lot more harmful than tobacco. While tobacco kills your lungs it doesn't impair your judgment, but, alcohol does impair your judgment especially if you are a driver.

Smoking is much more likely to kill only you. Alcohol increases your risk of killing someone else. It's a mind-altering substance that impairs your judgment.
You never hear about tobacco being a factor in a car accident.

Tobacco impairs your judgment less. When your 18 your old enough to make your own decisions. But when it comes to alcohol, a young mind is likely to make bolder, dumber mistakes when impaired.

Tobacco doesnt impair your judgement when you drive ya dumb asses (you and the girl before me) . Alcohol is dangerous to everyone, when it is abused. Tobacco is only dangerous to yourself. So you have to be more mature to consume or buy alcohol

Yes, I agree with you. I guess they figure at 18 you are old enough to kill yourself breathing in noxious fumes, but if you are going to drink and maybe drive or get into a fight and hurt someone, you should have a couple extra years to think about that.
