We are trying for our second baby but in my first pregnancy I had an anterior placenta (where the placenta lays between the baby and your stomack muscles, rather than the baby and your back). LUCKILY it was not low lying and i was able to give birth normally, but if it had been low lying (placenta praevia/previa) i would have had a c-section.

I am worried that this could happen again, so i would like to know how common it is to have 2 anterior placentas in succession, or is it rare to have it happen a second time? The first time was apparently very unusual in first time pregnancies and there was no reason for it. The doctor could not say whether or not it could happen again!! The only side effects I had were a HUGE placenta as it had more space to grow, and i didn't feel any kicking under my ribs! I'm just a bit worried that if it happens again it could be low lying and i would need a c-section - i'm terrified of surgery!

Sensible answers only please!!!

I didn't have this problem, but I had placental abruption with my son at 29 weeks and had to have an emergency c-section. My doctor has already ordered 4 ultra sounds and I am only 17 weeks, and I will be having ultra sounds every 4 weeks starting at 22 weeks to check the placenta. Good luck to you. BTW: son is 23 months now and doing great.

Think of your uterus as a large hollow pear made of muscle. The pear is upside down (stalk down) in your pelvis. The side nearest your spine is called the posterior wall, the side next to your tummy muscles is called the anterior wall and the top of the uterus (or the bottom of the pear) is called the fundus.

In most pregnancies, the placenta is implanted on the back wall (posterior). In your case, it is situated on the front wall (anterior). This is unusual, but not unheard of. It is certainly nothing to worry about.

It just means that if, and only if, you end up with a cesarean section, they will have to go through the placenta. If you deliver vaginally, there will be no problems. Usually the baby startsd to move around 22-24 weeks gestation. The baby will start to move soon. If it does not move by 25 weeks, ask your doctor to do a non stress test. I recommend "kick counts" to my patients. YOu lie on your back and see how long it takes to feel ten movements. You should feel ten movements within ten hours. If you have had three other deliveries, there is no reason to suspect that you will need a cesarean section. Don't worry. Good Luck.
