I have a 1977 yamaha xs400 and i'm thinking it needs the carbs rebuilt or cleaned cause it won't idle at all, it will start right up but then you have to mind the throttle and keep it over 3000rpm to just keep it running, any help on the subject would be awesome.

Yeah, get a manual. But buy a Clymer, not a Haynes. That is if you live in the USA. Haynes are written in filthy limey bastard English, while Clymer's are written in American English. Could be worse. Could be in gangsta rap yo! Still about $20!

-Remove the carbs from the bike.
-Remove the float bowls.
-With carb cleaner in a spray can -
Clean any dirt in the bowls. Remove the jets and spray through them. Hold them up to the light, you should be able to see through them if they're clean. Spray through the ports the jets came out of. If the spray comes out somewhere else on the carb, they're probably clean.
-Remove the top of the carbs and check the diaphrams for tears. Clean the slides and neeedles.
-You didn't mention if the carbs were leaking (over flowing), so no need to check the float level.
-Any other questions - ask away!

Previous poster forgot to mention the pilot jets are hidden under a rubber bung and the mixture screws may be hidden under an EPA plug.
You need a service manual, the Haynes will work at about $20.00
