Sounds like you already know what it IS. It was enough to purchase a pint of rum or grog as it was called.

A dubloon was a Spanish coin used in the time of the Conquistadors. There were silver dubloons and gold dubloons, so there wasn't a set value, apparently. Their value would probably have depended on where you were at the time. I have a dubloon, but I don't know just how rare they are now.

A doubloon was also known a "pieces of eight". They were considered legal tender and were used even in the USA until 1847- long after we won our independence from Great Britain.
