I am a Florida native, and I think that the south is NOT inexpensive. I have bought 2 houses soo far,and the prices are 350, 000 USD and 500,000 USD. For people to say that the Southern states are the cheapest is such a lie. They are underestimating and judging the south, and are being streotypes. That is nonsense to be saying the South is cheapest. I would be a liar if I agreed with them. I say that you should check the web for more info, and don't listen to the people who don't really know what they are talking about. To all the people who say Southern states such as Florida is cheap, grow up!!!!! One of the main reasons that Florida is expensive is because it's a pennisula, and waterfront property prices are CRAZY.

Assuming you want to live in a larger city, the most affordable place (housing-wise) in the US is currently San Antonio. But people are starting to figure that out and investors are starting to bid that market up, so now would be a good time to get in if you are willing to move there.

Yes, certain midwestern markets (Northeast Ohio, Indiana, etc.) are getting more affordable as well but the growth prospects in those areas aren't nearly as good as anywhere in south or west, so your house is less likely to increase in value in the future.

Assuming you are not opting for a cardboard box under a boardwalk or living with a roommate, this may help you make a comparitive analysis of towns you are interested in. http://www.bankrate.com/brm/movecalc.asp

If you are going to rent I would say Arizona. If you are buying a house try Florida.
