Why are some countries reluctant to have contact with other cultures?

These countries tend to view other cultures as decadent, morally and socially corrupting and wicked. In most cases, these countries reject Western/modern culture and influence for those very reasons. Ironically, due to their self-imposed alienation, these countries most often suffer from stagnate economies, poverty and third-world social and political conditions.
