Interesting that so many people choose to stop the Holocaust and save six million lives (not just Jews by the way) yet so few choose to prevent Joseph Stalin from taking control of his country and exterminating 22 million of his own people. How quickly we forget people that didn't, and still really don't, have a voice.
I would prevent the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which led to the First World War, which as we all know, Germany lost, and thus suffering from great shame (and the poorly run Weimar Republic) allowed the rise of the Nazis (this is a quick summerization). Therefore, preventing the situation that allowed Germany to fall, would be the event that I would change.

I'd stop 9/11 from happening either by systematically assassinating the hijackers in the year 2000 or prevent the Holocaust by killing Hitler as a child (WW2 still would have happened of course because of Versailles). The killing Hitler part isn't so much as a safe guard as it is killing a vile piece of garbage that never should have been given the chance to breathe air.
I would assassinate Osama bin Laden as he was giving the victory speech after pushing the Soviets out of Afghanistan.

The fearful consequence of changing an event in history could have fearful and monumental consequences. Consider the case of killing Hitlet when he was a baby.
If there was no Hitler, Ernst Roem becomes Chancellor in 1933 and HE decides to conduct heavy water experiments which leads to the development of a nuclear weapon by 1939. In two years, he defeats England and Russia and successfully eliminates European Jewry. In another year, he enslaves the remainder of the world. Thanks to your meddling in the space time continuum, you made things alot worse....

I would, yes. I would do everything in my power to stop the Civil War. How I could, I don't know. Maybe if I was in South Carolina, secession wouldn't have happened. Maybe the Confederacy never would have come into existence. Maybe it would... never mind.

I believe I would have kept Lincoln alive. Reconstruction of the South may have been easier and not so contentious. Maybe black people would have faired better.
