Marriages are not working out the way they once did, because we now live in a 'me-oriented' society. People seem to be more about themselves than they are about the people they claim to love.
They are also very lazy and impatient. Marriage is always easy in the beginning, because you are just starting off & everything seems new and exciting.
The real test of a couple's committment to one another is when the realities of paying mortgages & utilties and raising children come along.
Many people don't have the patience to work things out when issues between them arise, or else they are simply too lazy to bother, so they just call it 'quits' and get a divorce, instead of giving it their best effort.
Most younger people that marry,
probably do love one another...
but whether they are actually "in love"
is another story. They also don't have a full awareness of what really lies ahead, because if they did, they might not walk down that aisle together.
As far as making a relationship work, both people have to make the effort...not just one. If only one person is making an effort, and the other one isn't..then the marriage is doomed to failure.

I think it's because getting divorce is so easy and religious morals are not as forced into kids anymore. Not that I agree it should be at all forced. If you are raised to respect the opposite sex and learn that love is a sacred thing just like marriage, it might just work out in the future. But alas, the world has changed and society sure has changed it's views on marriage.
Still I have hope for the true lovers out there that belong together and are going to stay together until death. I don't live in the future but rather in the present time, I hope my husband and I will prove to be one of those lasting relationships. Sometimes hope is enough to keep things moving.

We live in a "got to have it now" society. Men and woman see someone they want to bang and go for it. Also, people rush into marriage without really knowing each other, and then when thay get to know each other, they find out they don't like each other. Another reason is communication, it's the key to making a relationship work. People now a days just don't want to devote the time and energy it takes to make a relationship work. As long as you know someone very well and completely trust them and can talk to them about anything, then the marriage should last. I mean things still happen, but those are the important factors.

Most people do not realize marriage takes two to work it out. That it is another job you come home to and it needs constant care. Also, communication is a must and when a child becomes part of the picture it takes more work than before. Both parties need to be willing to compromise so before you get married think about what you're getting into because it is a lifelong commitment and if you want the easy way out don't bother to do it.

Hi Brina,
This is a really good question. I think the beliefs of being married have changed completely. Many people don't know of too many people who have been married for a long time (today it seems like being married for 15 years is a feat). Also, now that it is so easy for couples to divorce, they do it as any easy way out of things. My husband and I know this from experience. We divorced each other about 3 years back and remarried each other again after a year long divorce! Amazing, but with that year, we grew and understood each other much better. It helped us to realize what we were missing out on. Pride is a dangerous thing these days. Good luck with your investigation.

I think that alot of young people go into marriage thinking if it does'nt work out we'll just get a divorce. People are so used to getting what they want, right now, that they do not ride out the storms. They just get divorced. No counseling, no compromising, no discussion. I have been married 30 plus years. Went together for two years before we got married. We have had our share of rocky roads. We always work through it. I love him more now then when we first got married.

I think it happens for three main reasons.
1. People get pregnant and are forced to get married for the sake of the child even though had that not happened they wouldn't have gotten married and things in that catagory
2. People just aren't willing to work at their marriages
3. People are taught that if something doesn't work out immeadiatly you go find something else that might of might not instead of trying to make a marriage work
Note: I mean no disrespect to those who have gotten divorced for reasons that they should have or for other reasons too

There could be any number of reasons. In my case....
#1 - infidelity. He was in the Coast Guard. I lived in our home state. He lived with another woman where he was stationed...we were only married 2 months...real nice...I sure knew how to pick 'em.
#2 - He decided that he no longer had the same goals in life. I wanted kids. He knew this for the entire 4 years that we dated. 8 months after we got married I asked about having kids. He said he didn't want any. Another one bites the dust.
I'm now happily married (7.5 years) to someone who has the same goals as me and loves me (only me). We have 2 awesome kids. And we look forward to spending the rest of our lives together.

It's very easy now a days to get out of a divorce, plus it's socially accepted now as opposed to what it was 50-60yrs ago. Another reason I think that divorce rates are high is due to the internet. It's a lot easier to meet other woman or men and that can lead to infidelity.
