1. Comes from the fields of golden poppies that are common in California in the springtime.
2. Because Michigan borders 4 of the Great Lakes. Including all lakes in Michigan, you're always within 6 miles of a lake and always within around 85 miles of one of the Great Lakes.
3. Beehives were seen to express industry, thrift, and perseverance; values important to pioneers in the provisional State of Deseret. Years later, when it became the official State of Utah, the beehive was carried over.
4. Because Alaska has so few inhabitants. In fact, you can still homestead in Alaska. Homesteaders are often called "Welfare Pioneers" since its hard to actually make a living on land available for homesteading.
5. Because sunflowers are the most noticeable of the wildflowers that grew on Kansas plains.
6. A nicknamed picked by New York government officials to reflect New York's wealth and variety of resources.
7. In the 1840 presidential campaign, Van Buren supporters claimed Harrison (a former Senator from Ohio) was better suited to sit in a log cabin and drink hard cider by the fire than be president. In a twist that even Karl Rove would admire, Harrison supporters adopted the slogan "Log Cabins and Hard Cider" and made their campaign emblem a log cabin made of buckeye timbers with long strings of buckeyes decorating the wall. This was meant to show that Harrison was more in touch with the common man than the 'aristocratic, champagne sipping Van Buren'. Buckeyes have been closely associated with the State of Ohio ever since. (Ironically, Van Buren supporters were probably close to the truth, since Harrison was the oldest president ever elected prior to Reagan and died of pnuemonia only one month into his presidency).

1) California (think the Warriors)
2) Michigan (borders four of them)
3) Utah (Brigham Young's idea for the LDS community)
4) Alaska (most unexplored land in the country)
5) Kansas (lots of sunflowers)
6) New York (think of the tall building there)
7) Ohio (lots of them, and think of OSU's teams)
I figure that I've been beaten to it, but I thought that I share my perceptions.
