As a fellow DSM owner, My advice to you is buy a 4g63 2.0l turbo block, can pick one up usually for around 100-250. Rebuild it with a Topline kit (400), or go with a nice setup such as Eagle/Wiseco rod and piston combo. Then just purchase 1st gen turbo (14b) for anywhere in the ballpark of 50-100 dollars. If you decide not to go this route you could buy a JDM engine for around 1200 with an AWD tranny. You really can't amke the non-turbos fast. It's not a honda, it weighs more than a paper wod. check out dsmtuners.com read up on your stuff, surf the classifieds.

The standard trick items for the budget conscious:
1. High flow air intake. About 100.00, increases HP by 10-20%
2. High flow exhaust like Gibson, etc.About 250.00,increases HP by 15-25%
3. Performance Computer chip. About 250.00, Can increase HP by 25%. Usually requires premium gas.
4. Ground effects body parts. Spoilers, air dams, scoops, etc. 200-1000. Looks cool, little performance enhancement.
