If you didn't specifically train him to do so, then no, it isn't normal -- dogs are typically not that fussy. The fact that he's figured it out for himself (perhaps watching you and putting two and two together?) is quite remarkable; if you can show him how to flush, a good solid third of all your dog problems are solved right there. Maybe you'll get to the point where you can mount an electric can opener on the floor by his food dish and he can feed himself, too. *grin* Count yourself lucky he's come so far already (heck, I know humans who haven't quite figured this out yet, and they have JOBS)

~~it is definately a rare thing for an animal to use the toilet... there are a few out there that do that though... i had a cat named Sparky that used to use the toilet, and even would jump up on the back of the toilet and then jumping down would put one paw on the flusher and flush the thing until one day while flushing when jumping down jumped head first into the toilet bowl and gave himself a swirley.... he still used the toilet after that, but sparky never flushed again~~

I wish my dog did that. Then I wouldn't have to pick up his mess.
Then again his butt's probably too big for my toilet.

That's a neat trick.... it would be even cooler if you could teach him to flush after he's done... maybe light a match or something to cover up the residual oder... that would be very cool for a dog...

no but very cool! I would invite friends and family over just to show them how cool my dog was. lol! That probably seems a little gross, but I mean, c'mon! How many dogs do you know that do that?!? That's awsome! Hey, can I borrow your dog, so it can teach my dog to do that?
