I've been noticing lately that people seem to have a tenancy in court to say that God told him to do serious crimes, examples would be drowning your children, killing your spouse, or (if your where I live) running over some guy you don't know on the street.

What exactly type of defense are these people trying to play? Are they all trying to claim insanity?

Yes, they are trying to use an insanity defense. The problem is that thye're going have to prove a defect in their thinking, they can't just say God made them do it and sail on through to the mental hospital. They would've hae been better off pumping their bodies with as many different drugs as possible- much easier to prove w/ a drug test that you were nucking futs.
Either way, even if succesful on the defense, you don't just walk- you'll be sentenced to a number of years that you'll serve in a mental hospital (which if you were faking mental illness will probably push you over the brink), and when you're deemed no longer crazy, you'll be sent to prison to complete the remainder of our sentence.

some are using god's name for pity and or mercy. most courts see this plea and order mental testing. some judges just proceed with the case and let the jurors do the deciding. 9 out of 10 they all go to jail or a mental hospital..no one goes free.

insanity could sound about right....at least their feeble attempt to attempt to prove it....how do you, in the case of that woman in TX who, by the way is getting a NEW trial, drown FIVE kids in a bathtub and claim that GOD made her do it....people who know God and even atheists could acknowledge there isn't anyone like that....

it's been my experience serving on jury duty, watching the news, etc. that when people use god as an excuse, they really meant what they were doing, but they're trying to justify it in their minds. they think "how could someone punish me for doing what god told me to do?!"

bunch of pathetic crazies is what they all are. god didn't make anyone drown their kids, shoot their husbands, etc.

they probably are insane, If God wanted to take someone out he'd do it himself, he wouldn't need our help.

I guess so. I think they are just plain crazy and they are just trying to get out of it.
