Have you tried using salt. add a small amount of cold water to the stain and pour salt on top, rinse with cold water sponge. Use a little of your own hair shampoo to clean the carpet, it works just as well as any carpet shampoo. Once this has been done and you have rinsed the carpet , again using a cold water sponge. Lay a towel with a heavy object on top of the wet area , this will help dry up any water from the underside of your carpet . Leave over night like this, I suggest you have the carpet steam cleaned at a later date , as sooner or later , the water mark always reaches the surface. Hope this is of some help to you

Hmm, the only thing that I would try is Baking Soda and perhaps some Soda Water (like tonic or something); at least that won't stain, even if it doesn't work. Other then that, if it's not red wine (which you can clean w/ white wine) I don't know what house hold solution would be available. You can always just try soapd and water, not sure what color your carpet is though (I wouldn't do this on a colored carpet, just to make sure you don't lose any color). Hope this helps!

Boil water and a little brush or dish towel and to the best of your ability use it to clean the stain. I got my carpets cleaned one time and the owner told me that - he said always used the hottest water possible. I would not pour the water on the carpet, but using some type of cleaning tool (towel, sponge brush). Make sure you dab as you go so the broken up stain will absorb in a clean towel.
Also, maybe a little baking soda with water - make a little paste - rub with an old toothbrush - wash off with a wet cloth and then vacuum.

You can always use laundry detergent (in moderation) to clean carpet. Sprinkle in cool water, dissolve well, use a brush or even sturdy wash cloth. Promise .. the stairs come out.
DON'T SOAK THE CARPET, depending on quality it will either stretch or shrink. You don't want either.
I know I'm late, but this is good to know for future ref.

if you dont have a handy steam cleaner around, use dish soap and warm water, it will work nicely, if you need to make it dry before they get there use a towel to soak up first and then just a lil hair dryin dont do too much heat it can burn and leave a worse spot on the carpet good luck!!!!

plain ammonia
clean the dog vomit from the carpet. blot it with papertowels to absorb excess moisture. blot and rub and blot carpet with a little amonia on a clean towel. since it's a fresh stain, it should come up pretty quick.
