You need JDBC to ODBC bridge and JDBC drivers. After that you can use thin JDBC connection to connect to database without client

Unless something has changed substantially, you need the oracle client library on the system with or without odbc. The odbc driver piggybacks on the client.

ODBC driver itself relies on Oracle SQLNet. So, you need Oracle Client.

Oracle released Instant Client, which does not any installation, if that is what you want.
