Of course it is illegal, but you must understand, with some of the technology it may not work. Dell, Gateway,HP all have scripts which make the OS only work on their particular computer. You can also get free OS, such as LINUX also.

Yes... copying an operating system like XP is illegal, but there are free OSes out there. Try looking for a copy of Linux if you're building your own system.

It's illegal but it's cheap. OS systems are so expensive nowadays. I would just do it and don't tell anyone. Like on the internet and you shouldn't sign up for updates. That's how Microsoft tells if its a fake or not.

it is illegal if its windows/macos/solaris/...

it isnt for many distros of linux - the ones cover under the GPL (general public license).

if you build your own desktop, you are supposed to buy your copy of operating sytem from a software/computer store, if it is not covered under the GPL. (since you are asking this question, the OS you want is probably NOT on the GPL, and legally you MUST pay for a copy)

you can save some money by buying OEM software from the company that you buy your hardware from( that is a requirement to buy OEM must be purchased with hardware) it is cheaper than retail software but doesnt include support from microsoft. and yes copying software is illegal and with the keycode it will be detected as pirated. To be sure you get genuine software make sure you get a COA with it
