i've always been told to make an effort to alwys lay on my side when pregnant. i know that when you are further along, especially in the third trimester, the weight of your uterus and baby can cut off blood flow to your pelvis and legs and there is a higher risk of complications involving the baby and the placenta. if you have a lot of problems with sciatic nerve issues when you get further along, laying on your left side can help make that a little less painful. it also helps prevent a little heartburn due to acid reflux.

Its fine to sit in lounge chairs and to lay on your back for short periods. But if you are goingto lay on your back for a long period of time, make sure your feet are higher than your heart. That will help with blood flow. The reason for not lying on your back is depending on where the baby is laying, it could possible lay on a nerve and make your legs or arms fall asleep.

Laying on a lounge chair is different that laying flat on your back in bed or on the floor. Laying flat on your back can cut off the blood and oxygen to the placenta.

I am 26 weeks pregnant, and I was told not to lay on my back - completely laying down early on. It would be ok to do so in a reclining position, just not flat. My doctor said not worry if I was sleeping and rolled to my back, just when I wake up turn back to my side. I use a pillow behind me to, to help me from rolling over completely to my back. Seems to work.

It causes back pain - that's what happened to me. If it's allright with you, then I think there's nothing against laying on your back.
But later on your pregnancy, your not supposed to lay flat on your back (like sleeping) because it blocks some blood circulations. Besides, it's more comfortable to lay on your side as the belly gets bigger.

When you get to the third trimester of pregnancy I don't recommend you lie flat on your back for any prolonged period of time because the weight of your uterus presses on the major artery in your back that returns blood from your legs to your heart. But when you're sleeping you can't control what position you're going to be in. If you wake up on your back, you probably awakened because your body was telling you to shift your position. I recommend sleeping at an angle, tilted slightly to one side or the other. You can put a pillow between your legs to make that more comfortable.

Sleeping on your back is safe during your first trimester, especially if you're healthy and your pregnancy is normal. But once you hit about 20 weeks, lying on your back can cause your uterus to press on the inferior vena cava (a major vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart), resulting in dizziness, low blood pressure, and a possible reduction in blood flow to your uterus. As your pregnancy progresses, try to lie on one side or the other, and support your hip with a pillow. This allows for better blood flow to your developing baby.

I am also 15 weeks and I have the same problem, I read that the best way is sleeping on your left side... but I still woke up on my back... I think as long as you are comfortable is OK

I would think if it's comfortable for you, it doesn't matter. You can't lay on your belly, so how else are you supposed to lay down?

Well, if your laying on your back on an incline, then it's fine. You just can't lay flat on your back.
