Willow trees have an affinity for water and are often found growing next to or in close proximity to water such as streams, lakes, etc. The trees (roots) will definitely grow toward water, and can grow very far. If they are planted or growing next to water then there is no need to supply additional water. If the willow is growing in a dry area then additional watering may be necessary. They like water, so keep that in mind!

Yes they can be a problem to septic and water pipes. The roots will follow for moisture from any source. Also keep in mind that when planting that a mature tree can get 60 foot around in size. So give them plenty of space to grow.

My grandparent planted a weeping willow when they got married and the roots came up under their swimming pool some years later and ruined one pool liner after another. They finally had to have the tree removed. They go after any source of water.
