The Olympics games were started by the Ancient Greeks as a way to honor their gods, most notably Zeus, their chief god. They were held in Olympia. They were showing him that they took care of themselves and had to pledge that they had been training for a certain number of months before they were allowed to compete. However, only men were allowed to participate or even watch most of the events, as many of them participated naked. The games were initiated to foster good relations between the cities in Ancient Greece, since the cities often fought.

The modern-day Olympics were started again in 1896 and were held in Athens, Greece, with the traditional events of track and field, as well as many others. They were started again for tradition and to foster a cooperative world energy for peace through athletics. All nationalities, races, and religions are invited to participate to encourage a positive atmosphere.

The modern Olympic Games are modeled after the ancient ones, started in Greece somewhere around 776 BC as an additional celebration to rites honoring the Greek king of the gods, Zeus. These died out over time because of the eventual decline of the Roman Empire and the passage of most of Europe into the Dark Ages. It was in the late 1800's that a French aristocrat and sports enthusiast named Pierre de Coubertin began a movement to revive the Olympic Games as a means of promoting peaceful interaction between nations, as well as encouraging free trade between them. In 1896, all the noise he was making in sports circles finally paid off with the first modern Olympic Games, held appropriately in Athens, Greece.
