Rashomon (Kurosawa), even though technically it was just an honorary award. They all but invented the award because of that one. The Bicycle Thief (DeSica) is another fantastic one that pre-dates the official award.

Biggest rip off-Passion of the Christ was not nominated. The award is actually "Best Foreign Language Film." Instead, "The Sea Inside," a pro-euthanasia film, won.

A direct answer to your question--I always liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Ang Lee), and Dersu Uzala (Kurosawa).
