I have a wireless home network. The main computer runs XP, another does also. I want to access the files of a certain user on the main computer, from the other one - in other words I want to log in remotely so that I can get to my files on there (you can access the shared files on there, but not user ones, even though there is no password for that user ...?)

It is possible to do so from 98, what about XP?

Antirion, if you're there, could you explain what needs to be set up how, regarding permissions etc please? Remote Desktop was the first thing I tried but it didn't work, and my knowledge doesn't really extend beyond clicking the buttons in the r.d. dialog!

sorry not possible , you need to have remote access from both pc's. If you need desperately to access files why don't you put said files in a web hoster and password them , then you can get them anywhere.

XP has what they call a shared folder... you can usually access the folder by going to the root of the C drive. Share that folder and make sure that both systems are in the same workgroup. Then is you go into the control panel... open up Network Connections... in the left colum you will see a menu called Other Places... click on My Network Places... then you should see the other computer there... if you open that up you will see the shared files.

You can view all the contents of all the drives by using whats called the Administrative share... eg:

assume you have pc1 and pc2 on a network, and access the shared folder of pc2 from pc1, the address in the address bar will be \\pc2\Shared

just change that to \\pc2\c$ press 'enter' and you'll be prompted to enter the name and password of an Administrative account...get that right and you'll get the whole contents of the C drive visible... change the c to d,e,f or whatever any other fixed drives are installed on the pc to view their contents.

remote desktop connection will work if you are trying to access a computer running XP PRO. if you are trying to access a computer running xp home via windows Remote desktop connection it will not work. you can access a pc running xp pro from a computer on xp home though. trust, if thats what you're doin give up. it took me a year to realise that. try ultraVNC. thats what i use. or map a network drive. i use both.

ultraVNC: http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

Assuming you've got your sharing and permissions straight, it's pretty simple. Just use remote desktop from one XP to the other... simple as breathing.
