Great question!! I always wonder the same and I'm guessing english or maybe they all use their own language... they don't really talk much... they just complaint a lot and even if you don't know exactly what they are saying you can tell they are complaining and I don't think the referee will listen to them anyways, when he sees something that's not right he just does what he has to do no matter what the players say...
anyway, that's what I think...

Well, for example the referee who had Argentina - Mexico was from Switzerland, but he spoke Spanish (and French, and several other languages). The refs are grouped by zone with their assistants, so *they* all understand each other, and if a player doesn't understand he can probably find at least one teammate that speaks one of the ref's languages.

i think that all the referees have to seak english since they cant referee a game where their nation of origin is being represented
