The reason it's burning your lap is because you are cutting off the airflow to the vents at the bottom of the laptop housing and the computer's CPU is getting hot... and so are you. Here is a possible solution for you, and it will help your laptop (and your lap)last longer.
They make a little tray-shaped device, about the same width as a laptop, called a "cooling mat" or "cooling tray" that you can place your laptop on. It has a couple of small fans built into it. The fans are powered via a USB plug that just plugs into the back of the laptop. They keep the CPU cool, and you can then hold your laptop in your lap without fear of getting the "hots" anymore. It will also add life to the computer as it disperses the heat more efficiently rather than just relying on the often underpowered stock mini-fan that's built in. Most any place that sells computers or accessories will have one, and I believe they are relatively inexpensive...certainly cheaper than a new laptop, or skin grafts.
Don't use a towel or anything else that will block the vents in the housing; you will overheat the computer and do damage to the system.
Hope this helped.

Don't put it directly on your lap for extended periods of time (much more than an hour). Take breaks and let your lap cool down. Also...try using a desk. Your body will thank you since using a laptop on your lap for a long time is bad ergonomics!
