I would like to post some poetry and have it critiqued, preferably by a larger online poetry community. Do you know of any really good poetry sites? And please, no poetry.com. That site is a scam anyway, they just want you to buy their books... Thanks

Good for you for recognizing Poetry.com for what it is. =)

When posting your poetry online for critique, make sure you do it in a place that's not accessible to the general public--a password protected forum, a private e-group, etc.--because posting work online often constitutes your electronic rights for that piece. Sites like http://fmwriters.com and http://absolutewrite.com/forums/ have password protected forums for critique purposes that you can request to join. The sites themselves aren't specific to poetry, but I believe both have forums for poetry critique.

There's no one online workshop that suits everyone. You'll need to look around and get a feel for what suits your style of writing and critique.

Many sites are heavily postmodernist and will slam anything that isn't cryptic. Some sites focus on formed poetry and will slice your meter to pieces if you post free verse. Some encourage the lyric... the workshop must suit the poet.

I'd recommend checking out a few of the older crit boards - visit the IBPC website and look at the list of participating boards. Browse and get a feel for what's considered "good" on each of these workshops. Follow the links you find on these boards to other sites.

Don't worry too much about losing rights to your work. Anything you write is protected by copyright - whether it's public or private. Your only concern should be the archive policy of the workshop (some magazines consider workshops with permanent archiving as "prior publication.")

I post all of my finished poetry on my blog. Poetry has no monetary value (unless you're selling lousy anthologies to the vain and naive.) The only advantage to print publication is to earn yourself a teaching position somewhere. If you have no desire to teach, consider sharing your work in an online zine or blog.

Good luck!

I know you want a website, but why not try checking out a community college in the area or a university for a writing group. Check out coffee shops also (I just moved from a town that had a monthly poetry meeting which was amazing!) and libraries for listings of poetry groups. In a person-person group you'll get immediate feedback and can really get to know the people (online you can too, of course, but you also run the risk of having idiots posting stupid and useless comments).

If you can't find a person-person group try creating one.
Good luck!

poetry .com is not a scam. They ask you to buy a book after they copyrite and publish it in a book of poetry..but they don't make you buy anything. They also have a poetry community that will critique your poetry. They have huge poetry conventions every year that you will receive invites too..of course you'll have to pay for your reservation and stuff..but that's everyone at every kind of convention.I have many poems copyrited that have not even been published..but it's a free copyrite..so their mine.
