In Louisiana you should always look at the shape of the head. Was it triangular in shape? Was there a pit between the eyes? Those are both indications of a poisonous snake like a cottonmouth.

Actually it saounds like a gray rat snake to me, if it has blotched patterns on it then it is probably that. There are many species of snake in your area, it could have also been a species of rattler. Your brother might have meant Black racer. The bull snake and southern Hognose also fit your description. Hope that helps!
