Yes, it is way cheaper.

There are plenty of guides on the Internet.

You not only save money, you also learn a new skill (building computers) which can actually make money by helping others once you learn yourself.

The thing is to not be afraid. Ask before you buy parts to make sure they are compatible.

Don't worry, the the main thing. You won't mess up.

I built my own computer. Advantages, you can put EXACTLY what you want in it, from the RAM, the video card, processor, motherboard type, etc. I thought it would be more cost effective than just buying one, but I got into it and ended up spending a good lot on it. Disadvantages, none that I can really think of - just gotta make sure you know what you are doing, and that all the parts are compatable with each other. It's not nearly as hard as everyone makes it out to be though. I love my computer - I'm considering making another one that is AMD based instead of Intel. Good luck. :)

Is it cheaper? It depends on what you put into it.
Is it fun? You bet it is, the satisfaction of building your own PC is great. Not only did you build it but if something goes wrong you have a better understanding and can now do your ownfault tracing and repairs.
I have 3 desktop PC's and I have built them all and now my 17yo son has built his first PC. Don't listen to the buy a built machine crowd. Do your research about what you want and buy the parts. Spend some time searching the net about building your own PC. Check out the mags for the best buys in terms of performance and value for your dollar, pound, yen or whatever currency you use. Remember if you built it you can upgrade it.
Good Luck and keep us posted with your results.

Well, sometimes it can be cheaper than buying one. Depends on where you get your parts and all that. I get mine from www.tigerdirect.com. Its more fun to build the computer yourself, as long as you know what you are doing. Just make sure you dont short anything out, or try and jam something somewhere where it doesnt belong.

you should try building your own computer only if you have atleast a general idea of what you are doing. if the different parts of your computer are not optimized, a lot of power will be wasted and you end up getting less bang for the buck. its best if you talk to someone who sells assembled PCs. that way, you can tell him what you want and he can put it together for you. not as cheap as making it from the parts themselves, but you end up with a better computer
