I have a 1994 MX-5 (Miata).
The problem is that after 5k RPM (read : as soon as I hit 5k - all the way to redline), there's something in my drivetrain that makes this whistling noise.
It's not air/exhuast/fumes of any type escaping from anything - it's like something metal spinning around the driveshaft and after it gets into the power band (after 5k PRM) it just spins a little loose and makes that whistling noise...
When I let off the gas (engine brake - coast) in 2nd and 3rd gear, it makes this rasping noise at 3k RPM. It sounds like a small, broken high speed fan blades scraping on sandpaper for a second... kinda sorta sounds like a card-board made wastegate... something is definately not right down there. Sounds cool though.

That reminds me. I replaced my master/slave cylinder because I had a leak... which has been causing 2nd gear to grind. BAD. Even 3rd. I just have to shift into 2nd slowly. So, naturally I assumed it to be the synchro whenever I first started having the problem. But since I knew my clutch wasn't properly disengaging (air in hydraulic lines - that got fixed) I thought that's what was causing it. Well, it's still grinding.
Gearbox feels a bit notchy too. Yea. Probably time for a new transmission. Gearbox too? ... dunno how reliable those are. Probably not very with me driving.
