I'd say they're about as good as anything else out there for the most part. Other than the very very small and the very very expensive, the cars are competitive. The people telling you that you're wrong have probably never driven an American car within the last 5 years, and are thus ignorant.

Yes, they are the best at poor fuel consumption, they hold the record for high emissions, they are the absolute champions in recalls. US cars were the benchmark of quality, 45 years ago. In the 1970's they began to turn out junk and that went well into the late eighties. By 1996 quality was beginning to improve and lately we have improved even more. However we still ignore the environmental concerns and in the middle of all this hoopla about gasoline prices and global warming every American manufactures is pushing their newest "muscle" car. We have the technology to produce "smart" cars that would get 60 mpg and sell for under 12 k, but we insist on our image as adult hot rodders instead.

I'm pretty sure the person who asked this question was just looking to get people all worked up. So I guess I'm a victim for answering.
Japanese imports are more efficient, last years longer, break down less, are easier to fix, are designed better, etc... I could go on all day. Last I checked, domestic manufacturers consider anything with over 75,000 miles on it "high mileage", that is not even a break in point for most Honda's!

It depends on what the best means to you. Some foreign cars hold their value better and have lower repair costs. If this is what a good car means to you then the answer to your question is that you are wrong.

Best? Toyota and Honda are forerunners in economy. Nissan is a forerunner in engine efficiency. BMW and Bentley are forerunners in luxury, and lamborhini, spyker, Ferrari and Porsche are forerunners in power.
And american cars are? Forerunners in gas consumption?
Our cars are not the best. Granted, I love me my Ford Mustang, and would kill for the Dodge Viper (which has the worlds highest power-weight...). But definitely not the best.

Nope, your wrong.
American cars look good, but are built to fall apart~ so that they feed the auto business itself. It is a perpetual cycle.
I have owned both foreign and domestic. I prefer the foreign.
