Liberalism is an ideology, philosophical view, and political tradition which holds that liberty is the primary political value. Broadly speaking, liberalism seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, especially of government and religion, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports relatively free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of minorities are protected.
Conservatism is tethered to the traditions of a given society and therefore it cannot hold any single or universal meaning across the world. Additionally, conservative 'means' are often combined with other ideological 'ends' (e.g.: Conservative or Classical Liberal versus Radical Liberal). Conservatism is older than the left-right division in politics; and conservatives may align with either the left or right depending on the time and place.
Republicans and Democrats, or as I call them Dempublicans and Republicrats are basically the same thing. People trying to get their way and they can really by definition be both liberal and conservative despite their political affiliation. Party lines have become warped over the years and I doubt that it will ever straighten itself out.

To understand those terms you have to understand something called the political spectrum. The political spectrum has a left, a right, and a center. A political philosophies fall somewhere on this line. Lets just establish where each of the terms that you mention fall:
Democrats are members of a political party whose beliefs fall on the left.
Liberals are anyone to the left of the political spectrum.
Repulicans are members of a party that has right wing views.
Conservatives are anyone who falls to the right of the political spectrum.
Now what does right and left mean? People on the left believe in a big government that directly affects the lives of the public in a big way. On the extreme left of the side, is Communism which believes in state regulation of everything. Most Democrats believe that people should be able to own property and believe in free enterprise, but they also believe that the government should put some regulations on these things for the best interests of the people. That is why Democrats believe in environmental regulations, labor laws, and the importance of taxation.
Conservatives on the other hand, believe in limited government. They believe that people should be able to build their own industry without any interference from the government. That is why Republicans tend to oppose environmental regulations, are less willing to enstate labor laws, and encourage tax cuts.
People who fall in the center have a combination of these beliefs.
So you see, Democrats who are generally liberal fall on the left and believe in big government. Repulicans who are conservative, fall on the right and believe in limited government.
