Obviously its not so out of character considering he did it to Jochen Kientz in the game between Juventus Turin and Hamburger SV. He also got a red card and a two-game suspension for stomping on Saudi Arabia's captain Fuad Amin in the 1998 World Cup, allegedly in response to a racial slur. Congratulations and VIVA ITALIA LE CAMPIONI DEL MONDO!

For those talking about Materazzi's defense, he admitted to insulting him but denied calling him a terrorist and admitedly said that he's ignorant for not knowing what an "islamic terrorist" is. As for the lip readers, I don't know if anyone noticed but all the lip readers are reading different things from the same lips!

everyone protecting zidane seems to be doing it on the grounds of racial slurs. that being said... calling italians scum among putting them down in other ways just goes to show the lack of class the zidane fans are willing to demonstrate as a result of his bad judgement.

people like it when others stick up for themselves against bullies. Soccer has for too long been known for racist comments and treatment of players of african ethnicity. to proclaim to be a world sport, the continued allowance of this type of treatment without sanctions is deplorable.

Well, I guess thats a pretty good question. I think people are mostly defending Zizou because there is actually significant proof that Materazzi did infact say such things. Italian lip-readers themselves told BBC what bad things Materazzi said. So its not just French or others defending him, there are also Italians that agree. And as for Materazzi, he says he doesn't even know what "terrorist" means (even though people claimed he called Zidane a derty terrorist). Now, thats his defence? I don't know what others think but thats not a good enough response. How can you not know what a terrorist is when you have been seeing it on the news for many years now -- thats just way too ignorant.
Zizou wasn't the one to tell the news what Materazzi said, it was infact the lip-readers and translators that were hired to investigate this. So, I guess its basically just a matter of which side has more evidence, and people will believe them.

Anyways, congratzz on your win, ITALIA! =)

due here`s the deal. I have been playing soccer since i was 2 and watching it since i was one. Italians are the ludacris thing to come to fifa because that is thier strategy (congrats to pople who "guessed" right). They don`t care about any sportsmanship and their coach is an asshole. I know that the coach and italians themselves have been screaming since they came into fifa, curse him!, or insult him!, or etc...... They ticked me off and whenevr there was an italian game, i hoped they lost.
Thing is, in this world cup, they didnt lose at all. I bet most of u dont no this but there`s no more zidane in fifa...he`s retiring. And just 4 his goodbye present, the Italians insult his race, his mom, dad, and family, and everything else in france. I would get so ticked off. If u still dont believe that he should of kepot his temp. down, then this might help u.
Imagine if u were play street soccer in a poor neighborhood(especially here in colombia;phew!, theres a lot of street futbol here, theres lines of teams to play) these peole call u a f***ing soccer player who doesn`t know soccer at all and ur whole family sucks his a**, and everyone would say, Mierda!... or damn!.... he dissed u and u r standing there being laughed at what wood u do... would just cry walk away or would u stand up and fight phisically or with words..... that was the situation for zidane.... italian teamates were laughing at him after materazzi told him that and zidane got pissed; pissed because it was his last game and that some1 would try to hurt him. And now if u still dont care for zidane, then this might help u.
U HAVE NO CONCIONCE OR SOUL IN U OR U R A GOODY 2 SHOES!!!!!!!! There`s my answer... and if u want to be sure and everything i said is true, search it up and it will say practically what i have said...

For me this media response, which looks very much like government agency orchestrated propaganda campaign, is just one more proof that Zidane was not simply a footie player; or more accurately not a footie player at all. He is a propaganda figure fabricated through media campaigns by the type of people who hung around BBC, Guardian, American democratic party, hi-tech corporate elite or countless "save the worlds" liberal-bureaucratic NGO's .
What is going now is typical "damage control"(somehow reminds me a similar or even same people hysterically looking for excuse after Clinton screwed with Monica, even though it is totally different issue). And part of it is an attempt to make the scape goat from another guy, who, unlike Zidane, is just a football player(equally talented may be) without loads of executive-presented awards, invitations to dinner with politicians and billion dollar worth publicity

Agreed - it's ridiculous. The attack on Jochen Kientz was so bad that he was banned for 5 games and he's been sent off a total of 14 times in his career, mostly for violent offences. Not an angel by any means.

I've said it before and will say it again, who cares what was said to him there's no excuse for violence. And as for all those who seem to think that criticising Islam (as people seem soooooo sure is what happened) was reason for him to do what he did, well as an atheist I feel I am within my rights to say that Islam sucks along with every other religion. Ditch your gods and get a life that doesn't involve supporting those who attack others.

He may have been a victim of religious slander and verbal abuse but as you aptly mentioned, hes done it before. As for the Saudi Arabian captain issue...I didnt know about that one...so if that was concerning a racial slur...then it would be definitely interesting to find out what Faud Amin said to him! ( because theyre both muslims! )

Btw...I see no need to protect Zizou when it comes to this issue. He knew what he was doing and it was pre-meditated.....even though it was in response to an unjust and cruel insult...just like what Materazzi did!

Materazzi knew it would get Zizou really angry. Thats why he did it. And his plan worked perfectly for him (Materazzi)...Zizou reacted.....head butted .....got red card...was sent off in disgrace in front of a billion viewers worldwide.

I don't think everyone is. Obviously some french fans are going to defend their player no matter what, that's the nature of sports. I for one was rooting heavily for france and Zidane, but like you said, not completely out of character, and a graceless exit for a great player.

because he is a fantastic footballer. And yes he deserved the red card, but if the ref did not see it and it was reported by the 4th official why were other off the ball incidents during the world cup not handled in the same way?

Hi,

I agree with the last few words you say: Viva Italia which you wrote also in French.

Well, any player can make the "mistake" Zidane did... tough luck to him.

FORZA ITALIA!

Zidane isn't the victim becuase in this case there is no victim. Each of the players got urt in Verbal/Physical way. Verbal is much worse bacause there is no magic spray from the trainers to get rid of it.
